You read that title right, today I’m sharing my ridiculously easy DIY sliding door curtain panel that requires no work. None. And it’s made from a blanket. It is a blanket.
Why?
Why would I use a blanket as a curtain panel, you may be asking yourself? Here’s why: if you hang out on Pinterest at all you’ve probably seen curtains made from super cheap canvas drop cloths you can pick up at Home Depot, Amazon, or your local hardware store. Well, I have this sliding glass door that leads out to my backyard and it’s been standing naked for nearly three years because I just couldn’t find a curtain panel for it.
When we bought our house, the sliding glass door was covered with a set of those super-ugly vertical plastic blinds–you know, the cheap ones that fall off every time you try to open the door. As soon as we got our keys, I ripped them down as fast as I could. However, at the time, I didn’t realize how hard it was going to be to find a non-polyester (& non-ugly) extra-wide curtain panel that would fit a sliding glass door. * THIS is the closest I’ve found and it is polyester.*
I hate polyester. I don’t do microfiber, acrylic, or any other man-made fabrics–just ask my husband who’s had to return microfiber sheets more than once.
Back to the sliding glass door, I searched everywhere for a cotton or linen curtain panel that would fit my sliding glass door, while also not costing a crazy amount of money, and just couldn’t find one. After that, I decided I would try out the DIY drop cloth curtains, but the measurements just didn’t work out with my door size.
Then I had an idea. Why not use some kind of light cotton or linen blanket? I always see these lightweight natural-fiber blankets at Target. I quickly scoured their website the other day and came across several lightweight cotton blankets. After doing a little math, I realized a queen-size blanket would fit my sliding door perfectly, and found one that was on sale. So I purchased the blanket and anxiously awaited its arrival.
How?
When it finally got here I hung it on a wraparound curtain rod I had purchased years ago (when I thought finding a sliding door curtain was going to be easy) using three sets of curtain rings I purchased on Poshmark–(if you’re new to Poshmark, get $10 off your first purchase by using my code:KGALLY). And viola: a super-easy DIY sliding door curtain panel made from a blanket.
The gray with thin, white, vertical stripes adds a farmhouse-chic look to my eat-in-kitchen that Joanna Gaines would approve of. Plus, I didn’t have to bleach or iron the blanket which is required of many drop cloths before hanging. This “project” could not have been easier. And the curtain is so light, my husband didn’t even know that it’s actually a blanket.
Here are the products I used for this DIY sliding door curtain:
- Wrap Around Curtain Rod
- Curtain Clip Rings From Poshmark. You Can Find Others HERE.
- Lightweight Cotton Blanket–The one I purchased is no longer available but Amazon has some great options, or try JCPenny, or even Etsy.
Do you have a sliding glass door that needs a curtain? Would you ever use a blanket as a curtain panel?

Thanks, Sharon!
Carol says
Did you sew the top or just flip it down & secured the rings to it?
Katie says
Hi Carol, I just flipped it.

I love this idea!
I am looking for a idea to replace my larger cabnet doors in my kitchen with a country kitchen pattern. Any ideas?
Katie says
Are you looking to paint your cabinets or replace them completely?
Jeannie says
What measurements did you use to determine that a queen size would work
Katie says
I just compared the size of the area I wanted covered to different size blankets.
