Dollar Store Valentine’s Day Wreath

Happy February 1st! I wanted to do another Valentine’s day project–a dollar store Valentine’s Day wreath–because I love Valentine’s Day. Have you seen The 10th Kingdom? When I was a kid it was my favorite movie (I now realize it’s actually a series–no wonder it was like, eight hours long) and I still love watching it on the couch snuggled under a blanket with Huz. Anyway, the show loosely follows many of Disney’s fairy tales, and one of the towns featured in the show is all about Valentine’s day.

Kissing Town is the quintessential European mountain town. It’s got cobblestone streets lined with Tudor chalets, white horse-drawn carriages, romantic resturants, and endless pink-and-red-heart decorations. You can even purchase a singing engagement ring for your betrothed at one of the many jewelry shops on the square. I’ve always dreamt I could live inside that episode of the show–it’s magical.

While visiting my local Dollar Tree for Valentine’s Day ideas, down the floral and craft isle I went when I came upon the burlap ribbon. Dollar Tree has a huge selection, but there were two that stood out. One was a traditional brown color, decorated with lace and the other, a bright bubblegum pink. Across the store I found a heart-shaped metal wreath ring and it was then that I knew exactly what I wanted to make.

I brought all the supplies home and started on this fun farmhouse/shabby-chic Valentine’s Day wreath.

Supplies:

  • Burlap ribbon–I used about 9 rolls of each-the lacy and bubblegum pink

  • Wreath Ring–I used this heart-shaped one, but a round one would also work

Instructions:

  • Cut strips of ribbon about 5″-6” in length–you can cut as you go but I found it easier to cut ahead of time.

  • Tie pieces of ribbon (alternating colors) in single knots around wreath ring until ring is full–I started with the inner ring and worked my way out. Once you have the first two rings done, you may not want to fill the last ring as that ring is not visible. I, however, did. For a fuller wreath, I recommend filling all 3 rings. To fill the last ring, you’re going to want to flip the wreath over so the ribbon that’s tied to the other rings is not in your way.

  • When finished, fluff up wreath. Note: This is wired ribbon. While the wire allows for the ribbon to stay in place once fluffed, it can be sharp and pointy, so be careful–I jabbed myself a couple of time.

  • Tie a long piece of either color ribbon around outer ring and hang.

I hung mine on my front door but this would also be a pretty wall decoration.

4″ strips definitely aren’t long enough pieces. I cut 18 rolls into 4″ strips and then went to tie the pieces on, and they were way too small to tie a knot. I think 6″ strips would work much better. I’m going to have to re-figure how to use the 4″ strips – possibly using a styrofoam wreath and pins.

Oh no! I’m so sorry 🙁 I don’t think I actually measured, I think I just guessed that they were around 4″ in length. I will change the post. So sorry you have to recut!
