Happy New Year! Is it too soon for a Valentine’s Day post–more specifically, an easy DIY Valentine’s Day garland? We just took down our Christmas decorations; the lights, tree, ornaments, wreath–everything. And our house has been looking pretty…bare; sad; somber. I’m thinking now of other adjectives I can use to describe the emptiness that is left behind once Christmas has waved its last goodbye. You get it. My point is, I needed something. It’s only the beginning of winter and I can’t live in a dark and depressing home. Since Valentine’s Day is really only five and a half weeks away, I decided to give the rooms in my house a little Valentine’s Day love.
My six-year-old got a pretty cool craft set for Christmas. We were going to get him a bead set because he loves making me necklaces at school, but then we saw this monstrous briefcase-of-a-craft-set which includes beads and had to get it. To be honest, I kind of wanted it for myself but he loves crafting with me, so I know I’ll get to use it too. 😉
Last week, while I was sick with a cold and sore throat for the twentieth time this season, my son had his craft set out, so we sat on the couch in our sweatpants and slippers and crafted this Valentine’s Day garland to hang in our living room. I have a feeling this is the first of many projects that will come of this art set.
The garland was super-easy to make. All I did was cut some hearts out of felt and then threaded the hearts, some fuzzy pom poms, and red and silver sequins onto red embroidery floss. After I was done, we tied a heavy bead to each end of the garland, which made it easy to hang without falling down or having to nail holes in walls or furniture. Here are the instructions:
Supplies:
- Several Pieces of felt in red, white, and pink (or whatever color you’d like)
- Fuzzy poms poms of various size ( I used red)
- Sequins of various size (I used red and silver)
- Needle, 1
- Embroidery Floss ( I used red)
Instructions:
- From various colors of felt (red, white, pink, etc.), cut out hearts of medium size (mine are around 2 inches).
- Use needle and embroidery floss to thread hearts, heart cut-out scraps, and sequins in a pattern of your choosing.
- (Optional) Tie heavy bead to each end of garland to use as weights (this made it so easy to hang), or tie knots or loops at each end of garland and hang as you please.
Since I don’t have a mantle, I hung this garland across my rustic/farmhouse-style entertainment center in my living room. I got the ‘love you more‘ sign at a thrift shop the other day. Also note the red heart marquee sign I got on poshmark last year; it really completes my bright and cheery Valentine’s look for this room (if you don’t use the Poshmark App, you should be–they’ve got some great stuff.
