This week my baby turned five! And even though nobody could come to his party, we still threw him one-heck-of-a bash!
The original plan was to have a party at a bowling alley but that idea crashed & burned around the same time our governor officially cancelled all schools and social activities due to this pandemic we have going on. As sad as I was for him, I was a little relived I didn’t have to attempt a 3-tier “bowling cake” complete with a fondant ball & pins that he asked for.
We lowered our sights just a little and went for a Toy Story themed backyard party, complete with party games & a piñata, for just the five of us.
When deciding on the type of cake to make, I could have easily gone with a simple 9×13 vanilla boxed option, but of course, me, it had to be special. It had to match his party. I’m more than a little obsessive about these kinds of things. And since I recently started cake decorating (check out Six Things I Learned In My First Six Months Of Cake Decorating), I knew this cake had to be homemade.
While searching the internet for a cake topper for a Toy Story cake, I decided to ditch any expensive topper and go with a small Toy Story Lego scene set I bought online. I figured we (the huz) could build the small Lego scene and then use it as a cake topper and it would double as one of his gifts.
This idea of using a Lego scene as a cake topper actually turned out fantastic and he loved it. I had never seen anyone use Legos to top a cake before and I’m wondering, why not? It was actually less expensive than the cake toppers I was looking at online, which didn’t even include the shipping cost. And It’s something my son gets to play with, too!
Here’s how the easy & fun Lego scene cake topper turned out ( I am no pro), & below I’ll share some other great Lego scene cake topper ideas:
