Farmhouse Decor Under $20

Can you guess what the top home decorating Google search was in 2019? Think for a second… No idea? “Farmhouse style.” Can you believe it? Are you over it yet? Even though Joanna Gaines popularized the term “farmhouse chic” years ago, the farmhouse look has been on-trend ever since and has zero chance of going anywhere in 2020.

Joanna really put her own modern, industrial spin on the “farmhouse” look. If you search for the term “farmhouse style” anywhere including Instagram, you’ll see a very light, bright, minimalistic look with clean lines and lots of muted neutrals, with very little actual color. This, however, was not always the case. Farmhouses have been around forever and very rarely (i.e. never) did you see white sofas, cement-poured countertops, and so much gray. I absolutely hate gray walls, but that is a post for another day.

My point is, the farmhouse style that is now breaking Instagram and everyone’s bank account is very different than the one that actually existed up until the 2010s. Nonetheless, I still really like elements of Joanna Gaines’ modern-industrial, farmhouse-chic style. For instance, I love Rae Dunn, I love subway tile, I love buffalo check and white shiplap, and many other pieces that make up the “modern farmhouse” look.

But too much of it makes for a kind of “blah” space, don’t ya think? It’s too muted. Too cold. And too boring. I like it, but I need some warmth. I need some glam. I need more color and less dreary gray. It needs life.

Okay, my farmhouse rant is over. Thanks for listening.

Sadly, the holidays will soon be over and everyone will be rearranging their homes for the new year and I know the farmhouse style is what a lot of people are going to be looking to create. But who can afford to spend much after all that Christmas shopping?

Today I’m sharing some of my favorite “farmhouse style” finds under $20. And since I like the look, but also need a little color, I’ve added a few unexpected items to get a more traditional farmhouse look.
