When you live in a home that’s relatively small compared to what you would like, how do you deal? How do you make your home look and feel bigger when it’s just too small? Today I’m sharing some great tips that when applied, will help make your home look & feel bigger.
Most of my adult life, I’ve lived in smaller than ideal homes. Currently, my house is rather large but some of the rooms are still not as big as I’d like. Without tearing down walls and doing a complete demo & reno, I’ve found ways to make this house look & feel bigger with just a few tricks.
-
Same Flooring Throughout
Having the same flooring throughout your home allows for a flow that doesn’t exist when each room is broken up by different types of flooring. If you like hardwood but it’s too expensive for your budget, try wood-look tile. If you feel carpet has a cozier feel, try a warm area rug.

Lighter Wall Colors
Dark walls just make a small space feel smaller. Painting your walls a lighter color brightens up your home and makes it feel larger than it actually is. However, having one darker feature wall could add depth to your space.
-
Glass/Acrylic Furniture
Furniture you can see through makes a room look and feel bigger because light flows through it and allows the room to go on and on. Glass and/or acrylic furniture will make your home look & feel bigger.
-
Light
Whether natural daylight (preferred) or artificial, the right lighting is very important for a bigger feeling space. Dark rooms make your home feel small and closed-in. Try to let as much natural light flow into your space as possible, and if you need to, update your existing lighting with bigger and brighter lights and light fixtures.

Lower Bed
One of the best ways to make a bedroom look & feel bigger is with a lower-lying bed. A bed is often centered in the middle of a bedroom and because of this, a very tall bed & mattress will break your room in half and make it feel a lot smaller than it actually is. Having a lower bed allows a flow throughout the room, and in turn, a larger look and feel.
