Steps to Organizing Your Home

Keeping your home organized is a crucial part of maintaining a stress-free and clutter-free lifestyle. However, this isn’t always the easiest thing to do, especially if you have kids. And getting started can be a daunting task. Where do you begin? What do you keep? What do you get rid of? There are so many questions, and in this article, we’ll discuss the steps to organizing your home to make it feel clean, comfortable, inviting, and a place you actually want to spend time.

Step 1: Declutter

The first step in organizing your home is to declutter. This means getting rid of anything that you no longer need, use or love. You’ll be surprised by how much stuff you’ve accumulated over the years that you don’t actually need. To start, go through every room in your house, including your closets and storage areas, and sort through everything. Separate items into three categories: keep, donate/sell, and throw away.

Be honest with yourself when deciding what to keep. If you haven’t used something in over a year, chances are you won’t be using it again. If you’re having trouble letting go of sentimental items, consider taking a picture of it before you donate or sell it.

Step 2: Storage

Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to figure out how to store what you have left. Investing in some storage solutions ( I love TJ Maxx for this!) can make all the difference in keeping your home organized. For example, adding shelving or cabinets to a room can provide extra storage space, while using baskets or bins can help keep smaller items organized.

When storing items, it’s important to consider how often you’ll be using them. If you need something frequently, make sure it’s easily accessible. If it’s something you rarely use, consider storing it in a less accessible location to free up space for more frequently used items. Check out my favorite makeup organizers HERE.

Step 3: Create a System

Creating a system for your belongings is an important step in keeping your home organized. This means giving everything a designated place, so you always know where to find what you’re looking for. It also means having a system for putting things away so that your home stays organized.

One way to create a system is to use labels. Labeling drawers, bins, and baskets can help you quickly find what you need and put things away where they belong. Another way to create a system is to assign each family member a specific area for their belongings. This can help eliminate confusion and prevent items from getting mixed up.

Step 4: Clean Regularly

Keeping your home organized is an ongoing process, and regular cleaning is a key part of that process. Set aside time each week to tidy up, dust, and vacuum. Doing a little bit each week will prevent clutter from building up and make it easier to maintain a clean and organized home.

Step 5: Maintain

Last but not least, it’s important to maintain your organization system. Make it a habit to put things away where they belong and to tidy up after yourself. If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to adjust your system until you find what works best for you.

By following these steps, you can create a clean, comfortable, and inviting space that you’ll love coming home to. Declutter, invest in storage solutions, create a system, clean regularly, and maintain your system. With a little effort and dedication, you can make your home the organized haven you’ve always wanted–even if you have kids.
