Last weekend our bunny died. He snuck through the fence and ended up by the road in front of our house. Something had attacked him. I called every vet hospital in the area but no one could take him. Peter died less than an hour later. It was heartbreaking for my boys and I to watch him suffer, and almost a relief to see him finally go.

We got “Peter Rabbit” last year around this time and I was looking forward to another spring of him bouncing around on the lawn, munching on the shrubs in our backyard, and lounging in the shade under our patio chairs.

Spring is about new life and a fresh start. Even though our bunny is gone, I’d like to think he started a new life somewhere great and he’s hopping through fields of tall grass and making new bunny friends.

We buried him under a flowering cherry tree my boys got me for Mother’s Day a few years ago. He is now part of that tree and the new life that the flowers represent as they blossom every spring.
